Editorial Policy

Our Mission

massgunlaws.com provides clear, current, and cited legal information about Massachusetts firearms law. We exist because Massachusetts has one of the most complex firearms regulatory frameworks in the country, spread across statutes, administrative regulations, executive guidance, and court decisions that frequently conflict or change. Our goal is to make that framework accessible, accurate, and navigable for residents, non-residents, firearms dealers, and legal professionals.

Independence

massgunlaws.com is editorially independent. We are not affiliated with any advocacy organization, political party, government agency, law firm, or commercial firearms interest. We do not accept payment to influence content. Our editorial decisions are based solely on legal accuracy and relevance to Massachusetts firearms owners and dealers.

When we cover pending litigation or proposed legislation, we present the legal arguments and factual status of each matter without endorsing a position.

Sources and Citations

Every legal statement on this site is backed by a primary source. We cite Massachusetts statutes, court decisions, regulatory guidance, and official government publications. All citations are linked to their source where available, and each citation includes a copy button so readers can verify our work directly.

We do not cite forums, social media, or anonymous sources as authority for legal statements. Third-party analysis from organizations such as GOAL or Comm2A may be referenced for context but is always identified as advocacy analysis, not primary legal authority.

How We Classify Content

We apply two independent classification systems to every content page. These systems measure different things and operate separately.

Content Review Status describes the editorial state of the page itself, meaning how recently we have verified our own writing against the primary sources:

  • Source Verified - Content has been checked against the primary legal source and confirmed accurate as of the review date.
  • Editorially Reviewed - Content has been reviewed by our editorial process but has not yet been verified against the most recent version of the primary source.
  • Pending Review - Content is awaiting its scheduled review cycle.

Legal Status describes the state of the law or regulation that the page covers, which is independent of whether we have reviewed the page recently:

  • Effective - The law or regulation is currently in force.
  • Proposed - Pending legislative or regulatory action. Not yet enacted.
  • Stayed - Temporarily suspended by court order. The law exists but is not being enforced.
  • Court Challenge - The law is in effect but is the subject of active litigation that could modify or invalidate it.
  • Pending Referendum - The law is in effect but is subject to a pending ballot measure. Used for provisions of Chapter 135 that may appear on the November 2026 ballot.
  • Repealed - No longer in effect.

A page can carry any combination of these two labels. For example, a page may be "Source Verified" (we have confirmed our content is accurate) while describing a law with a status of "Court Challenge" (the law itself is being contested in federal court). The review status tells you whether to trust our writing. The legal status tells you whether to rely on the law remaining unchanged.

Review Schedule

Content is reviewed on a regular schedule and whenever a relevant legal change is detected. Each page displays its last review date in the sidebar.

Statute-based content is reviewed when our monitoring system detects a change to the underlying Massachusetts statutes, when new guidance is published, or when a court decision affects the legal landscape. At minimum, every page is reviewed quarterly even if no changes are detected.

Time-sensitive content such as the 2026 Referendum Tracker and Legal Case Tracker pages are reviewed weekly.

Corrections

If you identify an error, outdated information, or a missing citation, contact us at corrections@massgunlaws.com. Include the page URL and a description of the issue. If possible, include a link to the source that contradicts our content.

We investigate every correction report. Confirmed errors are corrected within 24 hours and noted in the page's revision history. We take accuracy seriously because inaccurate firearms law information can have real legal consequences for readers.

What This Site Is Not

massgunlaws.com provides legal information, not legal advice. We document what the law says and how government agencies interpret it. We do not tell you what to do in your specific situation. If you need advice about your individual circumstances, consult a licensed attorney. Nothing on this site creates an attorney-client relationship.
