Every town follows the same state process, in which you apply at your local department online through the MIRCS Unified Gun Portal or on paper, and the fee for most applicants is $100. The sections below show what the Boston department adds to it.
Appointments and hours
- Applicants are required call the Boston Police Licensing Unit to schedule an appointment.

Fingerprints and interview
- Applicants will be required to qualify at the Boston Police Department Firearms Range at Moon Island within two weeks of the date of the application.
