Every town follows the same state process, in which you apply at your local department online through the MIRCS Unified Gun Portal or on paper, and the fee for most applicants is $100. The sections below show what the New Salem department adds to it.

How to apply

  • All new LTC applications as well as renewal applications shall be submitted on the new Massachusetts MIRCS Firearms Licensing Portal.

Fees and payment

  • YOUR APPLICATION CANNOT BE PROCESSED UNTIL YOU SUBMIT PAYMENT.
  • The LTC and FID application fee is $100, due when you submit your application.
  • Made payable to the Town of New Salem.
  • Mail payment to: New Salem Police Department Attn: Firearms P.O. Box 66 New Salem, MA 01355

Fingerprints and interview

  • First-time applicants will be contacted by our firearms licensing agent to set up an appointment for you to come in for fingerprints and to remit payment.

Processing time

  • We will contact you when it arrives and is ready for you to pick up.
  • On average, the process takes approximately 8-10 weeks.

Renewals

  • To qualify for the renewal grace period, you MUST submit your renewal application BEFORE the expiration of your current license.
  • For license renewals, after you’ve submitted your application via the portal, all you need to do it remit payment.
