Every town follows the same state process, in which you apply at your local department online through the MIRCS Unified Gun Portal or on paper, and the fee for most applicants is $100. The sections below show what the Somerset department adds to it.

Appointments and hours

  • If you choose to pay by check, please call our business line and choose the 'Firearms' option to request an appointment PRIOR to dropping off your check.
  • Rescheduling is allowed within 24 hours.

Fees and payment

  • Due to the increased number of applicants not appearing for their appointments, we must implement a pre-pay system for licensing fees.
  • Beginning 05/20/2024, you must pay for your appointment using the booking website (preferred) or you may pay using a personal check in the amount of $100.
  • To utilize online booking, you will be charged the $100 State licensing fee, along with a $4.00 booking fee payable with a credit card.
  • All fees are non-refundable and forfeited in the case of a "no-show".
