Every town follows the same state process, in which you apply at your local department online through the MIRCS Unified Gun Portal or on paper, and the fee for most applicants is $100. The sections below show what the Sheffield department adds to it.

How to apply

  • The application, whether for a new or renewal LTC/FID can be downloaded and printed from the town website or obtain one from the Sheffield Police Department station.
  • You may find it helpful to print out a copy of the application form and bring it, pre-filled, with you; however, the application will be completed live in the on-line system.

Appointments and hours

  • There may be occasions where an officer is unavailable at the station do to an emergency or being out on patrol, therefore it is highly recommended that you call prior to coming to the police department to verify that an officer is available to process your LTC/FID application.

What to bring

  • Bring your Massachusetts driver’s license and a check or money order made out to The Town of Sheffield.
  • You will be asked to provide the names, addresses and phone numbers of two references.

Fees and payment

  • LTC Class A, Class B and FID $100.00 (same for renewals)

Processing time

  • Application processing is initiated once the application is complete; however, current applications are taking over 13-15 weeks to be completed.
  • Be sure to keep this in mind when renewing so your license does not expire.
