Every town follows the same state process, in which you apply at your local department online through the MIRCS Unified Gun Portal or on paper, and the fee for most applicants is $100. The sections below show what the Stoughton department adds to it.

How to apply

  • Please note that applications will not be processed until all documents and payments have been received.

Appointments and hours

  • New applicants submitting applications and documents by mail or drop off can then use our iPad located in the police station lobby in order to sign up for an appointment.

Fees and payment

  • Payment in the form of a money order, cashier’s check, personal check, cash, or credit card (a $2.95 fee applies) can be made at the time of the in-person appointment.
  • Please make all check’s, cashier checks and/or money orders made out to the Town of Stoughton.

Processing time

  • Your license will be approved or denied within a 40 day period, by statute.
  • In total, the average wait time for the issuance of a license is approximately 90 days.

Renewals

  • Renewal applicants will no longer be required to schedule an in-person appointment.
