Every town follows the same state process, in which you apply at your local department online through the MIRCS Unified Gun Portal or on paper, and the fee for most applicants is $100. The sections below show what the Charlton department adds to it.

Appointments and hours

  • Scheduling is done through the dispatcher.

What to bring

  • First time applicants or persons whose LTC/FID is pre June 1, 1998 and has been expired for more than a year, must provide a Basic Firearms Safety Course (covers LTC/FID) or Basic Hunter Safety Course (only covers FID).

Fees and payment

  • LTC/FID - $100 (License fee increase effective 7/1/2003)
  • Money Order or Bank Check made out to Town of Charlton for applicable amount.
  • NO CASH, No Personal Checks, No Credit Cards

Fingerprints and interview

  • Several sets of fingerprints will be taken.

Processing time

  • Completion of LTC/FID cards may take 3 to 6 weeks (sometimes longer).
  • Three weeks after appointment, you may call dispatch to see if it is completed.
  • Once completed, LTC/FID may be picked up at dispatch window (they will NOT be mailed).

Renewals

  • If applicant is renewing, schedule appointment/drop off application four to six weeks prior to expiration, any more than six weeks is too early.
