Every town follows the same state process, in which you apply at your local department online through the MIRCS Unified Gun Portal or on paper, and the fee for most applicants is $100. The sections below show what the Lowell department adds to it.

Appointments and hours

Fees and payment

  • There is a $100 application fee for a Firearm ID (FID) or a LTC.
  • Only Money Orders are accepted as payment; no cash or credits are accepted, and all fees are non-refundable.
  • All payments are due at the time of your interview.

Fingerprints and interview

  • Following the interview, the licensing authority of the Lowell Police Department reviews the application and a thorough criminal background investigation is conducted.
